Define the replacement objective
Replacement can address delivery, cost, packaging or a second source. State the objective and fixed requirements, and retain the original datasheet, ordering code and design revision. Domestic candidates need the same disciplined review.
Go beyond frequency and dimensions
Compare electrical behavior, signaling, temperature, error definitions, pins, start-up, power and packing. Treat missing data as unconfirmed, not as evidence that an original requirement is met.
Match validation to the application
Select power-up, temperature, waveform, timekeeping or link tests appropriate to the project. Record hardware, software and measurement methods. Define the scope of a sample approval instead of extending it to every application.
Translate approval into purchasing controls
Engineering confirms the approved part and specification revision; purchasing then checks volume, documents, packing and delivery. A change in manufacturer, family or key suffix should trigger a difference review and a decision on revalidation.
