Names are not a universal ranking
TCXOs compensate temperature effects, OCXOs control resonator temperature, and VCXOs provide voltage tuning. Devices can combine features. The family name alone does not identify the best solution for every precision application.
Specify time to usable accuracy
An oven-controlled design requires review of warm-up, start-up and steady-state power, and thermal integration. Compare time to the required accuracy against the system budget, especially for rapid-start or battery-powered equipment.
Review long-term and short-term behavior separately
Temperature stability, aging, phase noise and short-term stability describe different effects. Reference, tracking and high-speed-link applications weigh them differently. Specify conditions and service life before comparing candidates.
Voltage control must fit the loop
For a VCXO, review control range, tuning direction, gain, usable pull and noise. Loop bandwidth and control-input noise affect system performance; a tuning pin is not a substitute for PLL analysis.
